Following consultation, the Government has backtracked on its proposals to 'privatise' the Land Registry. The Guardian reported that government minister Michael Fallon had originally backed the proposal but it was subsequently blocked by the business secretary, Vince Cable.
However, the Land Registry is expected to assume responsibility for maintaining a composite local land charges register from 2015. Currently, searches of the Land Charges register are administered by each of the 348 local authorities. This centralisation of Land Charges searches should provide consistency for turnaround times and search fees. The documents will also be available electronically.
