The Intellectual Property Act 2014 (the "Act") will come into force on 1 October 2014, introducing a number of changes to UK design law. This alert outlines the reforms which are most likely to have an impact on your business and the practical implications which might arise as a result of them.

Further changes to design laws are expected to take effect in 2015 or later:
- A new Design opinions service will be introduced, enabling designers to seek a non-binding independent opinion on validity and infringement questions from an examiner.
- IPO will increase access to registered design files online to avoid the need to request physical files.
- The UK will also accede to the Hague Agreement which, once implemented, will allow international registration of industrial designs.
