It has been reported that a Romanian businessman was detained last month for allegedly offering a minister a bribe worth €1,000,000 in exchange for help in investigations into his business dealings. Mr Catalin Chelu is accused of offering Junior Interior Minister, Mr Dan Fatuloiu, two houses, two cars and €50,000 in cash. Mr Chelu, a stock investor with an estimated fortune of €19,000,000 is allegedly the subject of three investigations.

Mr Chelu’s lawyer confirmed he was detained on suspicion of attempting to buy influence. Mr Chelu has denied any wrongdoing. Three other men close to Mr Chelu were questioned last month after a sting operation in the Interior Ministry’s car park.
