The Isle of Wight is aiming to be completely energy self-sufficient and carbon neutral by 2020. The island and its population currently use 600GWh of electricity from the mainland every year but a local community group believe the required power could be generated by solar panels, a waste-to-energy plant, tidal generators and geothermal power. It is even hoped that enough energy will be generated to allow the island to export some back to the mainland.
