On 20 November 2013, the ACCC responded to a number of questions before the Senate Economics Legislation Committee.  The ACCC’s response focussed on the following areas of activity:

  • investigations are continuing into information sharing arrangements between petrol retailers, as this may prevent consumers from receiving the benefit of competitive prices;
  • a petrol-monitoring report will be published shortly, analysing the profitability of the petrol retail market;
  • the ACCC has been undertaking compliance work in relation to unfair contract terms in standard consumer contracts, particularly in the telecommunications, motor vehicle hire and fitness industries; and
  • the ACCC’s role in relation to the voluntary supermarket code will be to enforce and audit the compliance of the code.
