Spain - More capacity for the radio spectrum provided to mobile phones Mobile telephony services will be allocated a new radio spectrum frequency band (1,5 GHz), previously allocated to digital radio. Nevertheless, the auction of the new band will only be relevant to those operators that already have spectrum and provide mobile telephony services, as the new 1,5 GHz band shall only be used downstream. On 8 May 2015, the European Commission adopted a decision to open up the 1452-1492 MHz frequency band for wireless broadband under harmonized technical conditions. Since the European Commission adopted the former Decision, Members of the EU have to implement this change on the use of the radio electric frequencies within six months. In particular, the Spanish Government has already launched a public consultation and will have to put it up for public auction. Mobile terminals, however, may not be ready to operate with this new radio spectrum band, thus, immediate effects of the public auction would be limited.
