Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), ranking member on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, recently introduced legislation that would assist in the development of hydrokinetic power projects in the United States. One bill, S. 630, authorizes $225 million in federal funding for hydrokinetic research and development and provides federal funds for the development of up to three hydrokinetic technology testing facilities. The second bill, S. 631, would make hydrokinetic and conventional hydropower projects eligible for accelerated depreciation over five years for tax purposes.
