The U.S. Department of Interior (DOI) has released its Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years 2011-2016. Prepared under the authority of the Government Performance and Results Act of 1933, the plan updates the prior five-year plan (FY 2007- 2012). Organized into five “Mission Areas,” the plan includes (i) providing natural and cultural resource protection and experiences; (ii) sustainably managing energy, water and natural resources; (iii) advancing government-to-government relationships with Indian Nations and honoring commitments to insular areas; (iv) providing a scientific foundation for decision making; and (v) building a 21st Century Department of Interior. The plan’s emphasis on integrating science into decision-making is reportedly consistent with guidance the White House provided to all federal agencies.
