ICANN’s Trademark Clearinghouse, the first centralized, international repository of trademark data designed to help rights holders around the world protect their trademarks across all new gTLDs is up and running, although hard to say it is a success given only 10,000 trademarks were entered as of October 14, 2013.

New gTLD registries are also gearing up to start their Sunrise and Trademark Claims programs. The Sunrise program allows trademark owners that have recorded their marks in the Trademark Clearinghouse to “pre-register” domain names incorporating their marks. The Sunrise program for شبكة. (Arabic for “web” or “network”) has already opened and will stay open until December 29, 2013. The Sunrise program for .singles, .holdings, .guru, .ventures, .bike and .clothing will open on November 26, 2013 and close on January 24, 2014. The Trademark Claims service sends notification to a domain name registrant if an applied for domain name matches a mark in the Trademark Clearinghouse and subsequently sends notification to a trademark holder if the registrant nevertheless allows the application to proceed to registration. It is made available for a minimum of 90 days after general registration in a new gTLD opens. The Trademark Claims service for .شبكة (Arabic for “web” or “network”) will open December 30, 2013 and close March 30, 2014, and the Trademark Claims service for .singles, .holdings, .guru, .ventures, .bike and .clothing will open on January 27, 2014 and close on April 28, 2014.
