The National Minimum wage increased to £5.73 for adults and £3.53 for young workers from 1 October 2008.

The Sex Discrimination Act 1975 (Amendment) Regulations came into force on 5 October 2008. They abolish the difference in treatment between employees on ordinary maternity leave (OML) and additional maternity leave (AML) and apply to women whose expected week of childbirth begins on or after 5 October 2008. Additional new regulations give employees giving birth or adopting on or after 5 October 2008 the right to the same terms and conditions during AML as they enjoy during OML and ordinary adoption leave.
