Facing a continued shortage of workers, BC has introduced a two-year pilot project which is intended to help eligible employers in the tourism/hospitality and trucking industries to hire foreign workers.
Foreign workers selected under the program may obtain permanent resident status. Workers in these types of occupations generally cannot apply for permanent resident status under the regular federal Skilled Worker category, so this initiative is a welcome one.
There are a limited number of eligible occupations. The full list is set out at the link below. The eligible positions include hotel clerks, tour guides, casino occupations, bartenders, food and beverage servers, kitchen helpers, cleaners (for hotels) and laundry occupations. Long haul truck drivers (who operate articulated heavy commercial vehicles on routes more than 160 km from home base) are also eligible.
