The Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD) recently announced that the agency will take part in the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s E-RACE Initiative which is designed to uncover hiring discrimination. As part of the Initiative, MCAD will send two comparable applicants of different age, sex, color or ethnicity to apply for the same position. The MCAD will then analyze how each applicant is treated and whether discrimination is present. The Initiative also will involve complaint testing, in which applicants take part in the employers’ complaint process to determine whether discrimination exists. This is not the first time MCAD has used this type of testing program. MCAD conducted an earlier program aimed at age discrimination. As a result of its testing, it brought complaints against a number of employers that it believed discriminated against older applicants.
The current Initiative began this summer and is scheduled to conclude in Spring 2009.
