Although the Abbott Government’s paid parental leave scheme is not set to commence until July 2015, the Government is aiming to have the legislation establishing the scheme through Parliament before new senators commence in July this year.

The Government is also proposing to use its constitutional powers to remove existing arrangements contained in awards, agreements and company policies, to prevent employees “double-dipping”. This is a departure from the Government’s pre-election policy, which only set out to prevent public sector employees from having access to two concurrent schemes.

The Government is also considering making up to 6 weeks (out of the 26 week entitlement) available before the birth of the child.
