In a recent press conference held by China’s State Council Information Office on the development in science and technology fields, Gang Wan, minister of ministry of Ministry of Science and Technology said that the total spending on R&D spending is expected to reach RMB 1.76 trillion, marking an increase of 70.9% over 2012; the amount of scientific and technological papers published internationally and the number of their citations ranked the second in the world; the number of patent applications and grants ranked the first in the world; the full-time equivalent of R & D personnel ranked the first in the world. The contribution rate of scientific and technological progress on economic growth has risen from 52.2% in 2012 to 57.5%; and the ranking of national innovation capacity has risen from 20th in 2012 to 7th.
