On 1 March 2013, the Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court found Liu Rongzhao, a former deputy mayor of the city Zengcheng and a provincial leader of the Communist Party of China, guilty of corruption and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Liu was found to have taken more than CNY 10 million (USD 1.6 million) in bribes between 2003 to 2011, while serving in his official roles. He used his positions to help real estate developers win contracts and real estate development projects.

In addition to his prison sentence, Liu also had CNY 1 million in assets confiscated. It is not known whether Liu will appeal.
