EPA has issued a progress review of its pesticide re-registration program for fiscal years 2009 and 2010. 76 Fed. Reg. 11,456 (3/2/11). The review details the total number of products reregistered by the agency and products that were fast-tracked for registration. Although the review is not subject to a formal comment period, the agency will accept comments about it until May 2, 2011.
Under FIFRA, EPA is required to review human health and environmental effects of pesticides registered before November 1, 1984. As part of the re-registration process, EPA (i) determines whether a product is eligible for re-registration based on whether it meets current scientific and regulatory standards, (ii) sends requests to registrants for product-specific data and updated labeling information, and (iii) reviews the information submitted. The agency also reassesses tolerance levels, which consist of the maximum allowable pesticide residue that can be left on food.
