Carole Begent, PSR Head of Legal, has given a review of competition in the payments sector. She discussed the three ways in which concurrency can be approached, namely the historical, practical and substantive perspectives. She acknowledged that co-ordination amongst competition authorities achieves more than case allocation as it helps the exchange of knowledge and experience. She went on to explain PSR’s role, drawing out similarities with a competition body, and reviewed the main provisional findings of PSR’s market reviews on ownership and competitiveness of infrastructure provision and the supply of indirect access to payment systems before discussing the expectations for the Payments Strategy Forum.
