Duke Energy received the green light for two new power plants that will use clean coal technologies. The first plant, which will use supercritical pulverized coal technologies, will be at the Cliffside Steam Station in North Carolina. The second plant will be built at the Edwardsport Station in Indiana, and will be one of the first plants in the world to make use of the integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) technology. It will also possibly be one of the first plants in the United States to utilize carbon capture and storage technology. Once these new plants are up and running, Duke will retire two of their older plants thereby decreasing emissions even more.
