On 17 February 2009, the European Commission (Commission) and the representatives of the relevant national competition authorities undertook a series of unannounced inspections at companies producing compressors (used for freezers and commercial refrigerators). The competition authorities are understood to be searching for evidence of an alleged cartel affecting a number of EU Member States. At the same time, it is understood that investigations into cartel activities are taking place in jurisdictions outside the EU, notably in the US and Brazil. The competition authorities have not named the companies under investigation but the Danish group Danfoss A/S has indicated to the press that its offices in several companies had been subjected to the surprise raids. The investigation is still at an early stage and it is likely to be some time before the results are made public.
