Rather than the usual proposals to encourage diversity, FIFA have hit the headlines by proposing nationality quotas. The football governing body have recently overwhelmingly endorsed president Sepp Blatter’s plan to limit a team’s foreign players to five. He wants the quota to be brought in by 2012 but the European Commission is very unlikely to allow it for European footballers as it will be contrary to the central EU principle of the freedom of movement of workers. This is lucky for English football as out of the four top teams in the Premiership only Manchester United would currently qualify under the quota!
