"I can't speak to you, I can only speak to the account holder" - a common response when you are trying to do something on behalf of a friend or relative; even if you are trying to pay a bill! A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a document that allows you to step into the shoes of the account holder and deal with their affairs. It can cover the situation where the account holder is incapacitated (mentally or physically) which, especially nowadays, isn't just relevant to elderly individuals. An LPA should be something that everyone has, like an insurance policy. Hopefully you won't need it, but if you do it is invaluable (don't get me started on the Court of Protection process if capacity is lost without an LPA). It is also worth doing sooner rather than later - the Office of the Public Guardian is reporting delays of 20 weeks to register the LPA (once signed it can't be used until registered).
