Employees who satisfy certain conditions will have a right to six months’ Additional Paternity Leave and Pay in respect of births and adoptions from 3 April 2011. They will be able to exercise this right by taking over some of the mother’s or adopter’s leave period. The new right will be additional to the existing two-week statutory paternity leave and pay.

The draft regulations appear to give similar pension rights on return to work as Additional Maternity Leave (full accrual for any paid periods and no accrual for any unpaid periods).

We will report further once the final regulations have been made.
