Antioch College recently installed a 1-megawatt solar farm as part of its plan to become carbon neutral, The Yellow Springs News reports. Approximately 3,300 solar panels will generate 1.2 million kilowatt-hours per year, and “is expected to offset the electric consumption of Antioch’s $8.8 million geothermal heating and cooling plant,” according to the article. SolarCity, the largest solar service provider in the United States, “will finance and own the array while selling the power generated to the college at set prices.” SolarCity’s major shareholder is Elon Musk, who founded SpaceX and co-founded Tesla Motors; like those companies, SolarCity is known for innovations within its industry, including unique financing options that tie loan repayments to energy production, and its plans to acquire manufacturing capabilities to further lower the cost of solar systems.
