Treasury has published a consultation paper on UK enforcement measures for EU Regulations 44/2009 and 45/2009 on counterfeit Euros. The Regulations apply to credit institutions, payment service providers, bureaux de change, transporters of funds and any other businesses that distribute Euro notes to the public using ATMs. They require these institutions to check Euro notes and coins for counterfeits before putting them back into circulation. Treasury is consulting on amending the Protection of the Euro against Counterfeiting Regulations 2001/3948 to introduce a new criminal offence rather than a new regulatory penalty and regime. The consultation closes on 1 November 2011 and the intention is for the new Regulations to be in force by 31 December (Source: Consultation on UK enforcement measures for EU Regulations 44/2009 and 45/2009 on counterfeit Euros and Impact Assessment)
