How to Register
Beginning on September 30, 2008 consumers can register home phone, cellular phone and fax numbers on the National Do Not Call List in two ways:
Online at http://www.LNNTE-DNCL.gc.ca
By phone at 1-866 -580-DNCL (1-866-580-3625) or 1-888-DNCL-TTY (1-888-362-5889)
Once consumers register, many telemarketers will no longer be permitted to contact registrants beginning 31 days after registration. It is important to note that consumer registration will not eliminate all telemarketing activities. Certain organizations are exempt from the DNCL, including:
- registered charities soliciting donations;
- newspapers soliciting subscriptions;
- political parties and their candidates; and
- companies with whom the consumer has an existing relationship.
Because market research, polling and survey organizations do not sell products or services, they are also exempt from Do Not Call rules. Consumers can request to be added to exempt organizations' internal do not call lists and these organizations must comply with this request within 31 days.
Consumers can lodge complaints about telemarketers they believe are breaking the Do Not Call rules through the same website and phone numbers listed above.
Consumer registration must be renewed after three (3) years in order to remain on the National Do Not Call List.
