Almost a year on from the introduction of the age regulations, the DWP has issued a consultation on flexible retirement and pension provision. Flexible retirement in this context means allowing a member to draw all or part of his pension and associated lump sum whilst continuing to work; remaining benefits may be deferred or continued accrual may be allowed. The document also looks at issues for those working after normal pension age (postponed pensioners). Consultation closes on 7 December 2007.
Unlike most consultations, this one does not set out proposals and then ask for comments on them but effectively asks what those proposals should be. The document states that "it is not possible for the Government to offer any solutions or exemptions at this time" and that "the DWP is not at present minded to offer legislation or guidance on these issues without fuller understanding of how they are affecting those who are experiencing them".
