Minimising food waste: the legal considerations
Trussell Trust, the UKs biggest food bank network, half year statistics show a 13% increase in the number of people using their service from April to September 2018, when compared to the same period in 2017. That’s 658,048 emergency supplies delivered to those in crisis in just 5 months. At the same time, 88 million tonnes of food was wasted in the EU; the majority of this wastage came from major retailers as the product had gone out of date. Michael Gove has announced a pilot scheme to reduce this wastage and the EC (European Commission) is issuing new guidelines on food donation to encourage retailers to pass food that is about to be disposed of onto re-distribution networks.
