It has recently been reported on the internet that a Singapore based company made approximately 50% of its 5000 strong workforce redundant by simply evacuating the building using a fire drill. Those employees who's ID cards allowed them back into the building were 'safe', whilst those who were denied re-entry were redundant. Personal belongings were subsequently couriered home to those who were made redundant. The company claim to have used this approach to avoid filling "the e-mail inbox with thousands of layoff and goodbye mails – and also to avoid any fights inside the office".
