The Office of Communications (Ofcom) is consulting on plans for a 111 service to cut calls to emergency services. The new NHS non-emergency service will be aimed at people requiring medical attention urgently but not in danger of dying. The consultation is in response to a request from the Department of Health for a designated three-digit number. The 111 telephone number will initially be piloted in a number of Strategic Health Authority areas from Spring 2010. The consultation process closes on 20 August 2009.
