The draft regulation is now held up in the Council of Ministers. This means that the Regulation  is unlikely to be passed by the end of this European Parliament (May 2014) although it may still  be pushed through the new parliament by the current Justice Commissioner, Viviane Reding,  before her term ends in October 2014. If that does not happen the future of the Regulation  depends very much on the new Parliament’s view on the position reached by the outgoing  Parliament. However, the high profile which data protection has assumed in many EU states means that this is unlikely to be the end of substantial EU data protection reform in some form.
