When the Southend branch of Jobcentre Plus received a complaint from jobseeker, Chris Jarvis, the manager wrote a letter of apology confirming that Jobcentre Plus respects a customer's religion or belief and confirming that it had not been its intention to offend his belief.
The complaint concerned an occasion when Mr Jarvis attended the job centre to enquire about his disability benefits and was escorted from the premises by security after he refused to remove his hood. So, what religion or belief entitles someone to wear a hood? 'Jedi', of course – the guardians of peace and justice in the Star Wars movies! Over 390,000 people listed their religion as Jedi in the 2001 census, making it the fourth biggest 'belief' in the country. May the Force be with you!
