The number of Employment Tribunal claims received has increased by 90%.

On 8 March 2018, the Ministry of Justice published the provisional tribunal statistics for October to December 2017, showing a significant increase in single cases.

This increase is directly linked to the abolition of Employment Tribunal Fees in July 2017. 3,000 new cases are being issued to the ET every month.

In our opinion, the increase in claims is likely to continue. Employees are likely to consider pursuing cases in the ET where previously they may not have sought to do so. We recommend seeking legal advice early so as to avoid the costs of proceedings and to enable a reasonable defence to be pleaded, if the case does progress to a claim.
