With the Kyoto Protocol set to expire in 2012, Ban Ki Moon has stressed the importance of agreements being reached at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen later this year. He stated that it is a "once-in-a-generation opportunity" for world leaders and urged them to "seal the deal in the name of humankind" through a "renewed multilateralism, a compassionate multilateralism." Consensus on agreement to replace the Kyoto Protocol will be hard to reach as countries will arrive at the meeting with differing opinions on the levels of carbon emissions reductions they are prepared to make.
