A reminder to landlords and tenants of commercial properties that the first stage of the Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) Regulations is effective from 1 April 2018.

Essentially from 1 April 2018 it will be unlawful for landlords to grant new leases or renewal leases of commercial properties with an EPC rating of F or G, subject to certain exemptions. Tenants who are intending to sub-let also need to bear this in mind as the grant of subleases of properties with an F or G EPC rating from 1 April 2018 will also be caught by the MEES Regulations. Failure to comply could result in a fine up to a maximum of £150,000.
