On 18 March 2019 the Australian Government announced that it will establish a National Blockchain Roadmap (NBR) to help position Australia's local blockchain industry to become a global leader. Blockchain is a distributed ledger technology that records and verifies transactions within a computer network and is useful for assuring and securing transactions.

Key areas of focus for the NBR include development of:

  • regulation;
  • skills and capacity building;
  • innovation;
  • investment; and
  • international competitiveness and collaboration.

To develop the NBR the Government will work with blockchain and technology experts from industry and academia, as well as with the CSIRO's Data61 to incorporate findings from their forthcoming future scenarios report on blockchain.

AUS 100,000 will be provided for Australian companies to join Austrade's Mission to Consensus in New York in May, an important event for the international blockchain industry. The Government is confident that such continued development of Australia's blockchain capabilities will give Australia a competitive edge across a number of sectors, including agriculture, fintech, resources and services industries.
