On September 24, 2018, with the act “on Copyright and Related Rights”, Kazakhstan established the National Institute of Intellectual Property (or NIIP) or the service responsible for "Entering the data and modifications thereof into the State Register of Rights to Copyright-Protected Items".

It is intended to be an automated service for author’s rights registration to the detriment of the Ministry of justice, previously being the authority in charge of it. The registration of author’s rights can henceforth be done in electronic form on a fee basis via the dedicated web portal.

As reported by IA REGNUM, this law intends to address what was an "unsatisfactory" management of the Ministry of Justice according to Olzhas Bektenov, the Deputy Chairman of the Kazakh Agency for Civil Service and Anti-Corruption Affairs.
