Privacy - Published on the EU Official Journal the new Data Protection Package

On 4th May 2016 the following legislative acts have been published in the EU Official Journal:
- Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC (General Data Protection Regulation).
- Directive (EU) 2016/680 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data by competent authorities for the purposes of the prevention, investigation, detection or prosecution of criminal offences or the execution of criminal penalties, and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Council Framework Decision 2008/977/JHA.
- Directive (EU) 2016/681 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the use of passenger name record (PNR) data for the prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of terrorist offences and serious crime.
This is the final step for the entry into force of the "Data Protection Package", designed to ensure an harmonized regulatory framework at European level in the field of personal data processing.
The Regulation will enter into force 20 days after publication in the Official Journal of the European Union and it will be directly applicable and enforceable in all EU Countries by 25th May 2018, date within which each EU Member State shall provide for the alignment of the national legislation to the provisions of the Regulation.
The Directives shall be implemented locally by the Member States within two years starting from 5th May 2016.
