The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) has published Guidance, aimed at parents, employers and local authorities in England on the law on the employment of children below school leaving age. The Guidance, which is intended to promote best practice among those employing children, includes sections on the types of work children can and cannot do, the hours they may work and specific health and safety requirements. The DCSF states that children below the age of 14 should not be employed, but recognises that local authority byelaws may provide for the employment of younger children in certain occupations.
