The current Form I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification bears an expiration date of August 31, 2012. US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) continues to accept comments from the public as part of its process to update the Form I-9. In fact, USCIS recently extended the comment period to allow additional time for public comments until September 21, 2012.
Of course, business activities continue, including hiring new employees and the need to reverify the employment authorization of existing employees whose work authorization is expiring. So, what’s an employer to do? According to USCIS’s blog post from yesterday, the August 31, 2012, version of Form I-9 will remain valid until further notice.
