Since 1999 the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has published a Statement of Best Practice for Critical Illness Cover to ensure that customers of such products can ensure that there are certain minimum standards of cover, that products are comparable across the market and to improve understanding about coverage. The statement is reviewed every three years to ensure that it is updated in line with medical information, regulations and legislation.
The statement being sent out for consultation contains proposals to rename and develop certain standard wordings for what is currently called Total Permanent Disability (TPD) (which the ABI propose to rename “Irreversible Life-changing Disability”) as well as clarifications to the standard definitions for cancer, Parkinson’s Disease and terminal illness and to introduce a standard wording for the pre-existing conditions exclusion used in children's critical illness cover.
The consultation will last for one month. Responses should be sent to the ABI by 30 June 2010.
