Today Monday March 29, 2021, Law 81/2019 for the Protection of Personal Data is entering into force in the Republic of Panama. This Law applies to all individuals and legal entities from public or private sector, profitable or non-profitable, handling sensitive data: the law is based on principles of loyalty, intention, proportionality, veracity and accuracy, data security, transparency, confidentiality, lawfulness, and portability.

The National Authority for Transparency and Access to Information (in Spanish, ANTAI) is the regulatory body, responsible for overseeing and supervising protocols, procedures and proceedings for a safety management and transfer of personal data, having the power to sanction due to wrong processing, in collaboration with the National Authority for Governmental Innovation (AIG) when dealing with TICs.

ANTAI is authorized to impose fines ranging from US$ 1,000 to US$ 10,000 according to the severity of the infringement concerning the misuse of personal data in the Republic of Panama.
