The government is seeking the public's views on its proposal to amend the Environment Act 1986 to provide for regular and independent national reporting on the state of New Zealand's environment.
The two central amendments to that Act would be:
- Giving the independent Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment a five yearly reporting obligation
- Expanding regulatory powers under the RMA to improve the consistency of environmental statistical information at the local level.
Written submissions on the discussion document "Measuring Up - Environmental Reporting" are due by 5.00pm on 18 October 2011.
