In December of last year and May of this year, we reported that the UK Intellectual Property Office was starting a consultation process over its plans to introduce a "superfast" patent application process that could see patents being granted in as little as 3 months. The high costs involved and other factors led many to have reservations about the proposals. Following the expiry of the consultation period, the proposals have been dropped.
It is worth remembering that even under current systems the UKIPO offers a number of ways of speeding up the patent application process and it is possible to get a UK patent granted in less than a year if necessary. Compared to other major jurisdictions the UK already has one of the most efficient patent application systems.
