The Competition Tribunal approved the merger between Dial-a-Bed and Coricraft, subject to conditions offered by Coricraft not to retrench 18 employees (who may have faced retrenchments due to a duplication of roles following the merger). The deal was a win for workers given that Dial-a-Bed was facing possible liquidation which would have resulted in mass retrenchments of the company's 200 employees.

Also related to proposed mergers in the context of facing possible liquidation by one of the parties, the Competition Commission has also recommended the conditional approval of a merger involving Lewis Stores and Ellerine Furnishers in terms of which Lewis will acquire 63 Beares stores. The deal will also save close to 400 jobs given that Beares is also facing possible liquidation.
