The Government is seeking views on the European Commission's proposal to amend the Pregnant Workers Directive. The majority of the changes would not affect the situation in the UK, as most maternity rights are already equivalent to or provide more rights than the EC minimum. The key proposal is the proposed introduction of a right to full pay during maternity leave. Member states will however be able to cap maternity pay at the level of sick pay. The consultation closes on 22 June 2009.
