EPA has issued a RCRA enforcement order to Metro Metals Corp. and Avista Recycling, Inc., of Toronto, Canada, and Hopkins, Minnesota, respectively, requiring them to properly dispose of computer waste they attempted to illegally export to Vietnam through the Port of Seattle. The order alleges that the companies arranged to export a shipment of 913 discarded computer monitors to Vietnam, misidentified as “scrap plastic” on shipping paperwork. U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents intercepted the computers before shipment. EPA alleges in the order that the companies violated federal hazardous waste laws and seeks a $31,600 civil fine.
