The staff of the Florida Public Service Commission has filed a report with the state that details how Florida may meet its goal of 20 percent renewable energy use by the year 2020. The PSC staff says that the best way to minimize costs for utility customers would be to expand the list of renewable energy sources to include:

  • Energy from nuclear facilities approved by the Commission since 2006;
  • Energy from IGCC power plants built with carbon capture and sequestration plans;
  • Energy savings from supply-side efficiency improvements; and
  • Savings associated with demand-side efficiency programs.
