The Finnish Medicines Agency (“Fimea”), a new state authority for medicines in Finland, will start operating on 1 November 2009.
The agency will handle, inter alia, the present tasks of the National Agency for Medicines (the “NAM”) associated with authorisation and supervision of medicinal products.
In connection with the establishment of Fimea, the NAM will be abolished and the activities will be transferred from the capital Helsinki to the city of Kuopio. Kuopio is located in the north-eastern part of Finland, about 400 kilometres from Helsinki.
The first 15–20 employees will start working in Kuopio later this year. The transfer will be carried out over a five year period, with around 200 jobs transferring to Kuopio by August 2014.
