In an August 19 letter to Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM) urged the approval of the SunZia transmission project, saying it would promote the renewable energy market and would create jobs in his state. He opposed the reopening of the environmental impact statement following recent comments from the Department of Defense which questioned the route of the line. Senator Heinrich said the department approved the preferred route in 2011, only asking that a portion of the line be shifted north; the final route reflected this change.
