The National Mediation Board (NMB) certified the Southwest Airline Pilots Association as the bargaining representative for 7,900 Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways pilots. Southwest acquired AirTran in 2011.
More than 350 instructors at the California College of the Arts voted, 181-113, in favor of representation by Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1021. The school is the third private San Francisco Bay-area campus to choose union representation and is a part of SEIU’s growing Adjunct Action campaign. According to Adjunct Action, about 21,000 adjunct teachers are now members of the SEIU.
Local 853 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) sent a letter to Facebook CEO and President, Mark Zuckerberg, urging him to encourage Loop Transportation, which provides shuttle transportation to Facebook employees, to recognize the IBT as its drivers’ representative. Local 853 previously sent the Loop Transportation President a letter requesting that the company recognize the IBT. Local 853 states that it is prepared to prove majority status within the 40-driver proposed bargaining unit.
Bike share workers in Boston and Washington, D.C. filed representation petitions to hold an election to determine whether the Transport Workers Union (TWU) will be their exclusive bargaining representative. TWU, which represents public and private transit workers and recently launched a national organizing campaign, became the exclusive bargaining representative for 249 employees of New York Citi Bike after a September voluntary recognition agreement.
Drivers at FedEx Freight’s East Philadelphia Terminal voted, 26-18, for representation by the Teamsters Local 107. Just a few days prior to the election, drivers at a New Jersey FedEx facility rejected union representation.
HMSHost, a concessions contractor at Portland International Airport, voluntarily recognized UNITE HERE Local 8 after a neutral arbitrator determined a majority of workers signed union authorization cards.
Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) employees voted, 166-28, in favor unionization with the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU). The NTEU will represent about 370 CFTC employees in Washington, Chicago, and Kansas City, Miss.
